MICHELLE THOMPSON ULERICH
Originally from California, Michelle Thompson Ulerich trained at San Francisco Ballet for 9 years. She joined Ballet Austin in 2001 and during her 14 years there, she performed in works by Stephen Mills, Balanchine, Tharp, Ulysses Dove, Nelly van Bommel, Thang Dao, Jimmy Orrante, Amy Seiwert, Gina Patterson, Thaddeus Davis, Gregory Dolbashian, James Gregg, Jennifer Hart, and Sidra Bell. She also earned her undergraduate degree from St. Edward’s University in Austin. CounterPointe, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Hartt School, SUNY Purchase, Harvard Ballet, Motion Dance Theater, Illusory Impressions, Ballet Spartanburg, Blanton Museum, Prelude Projects, Ballet Hartford, Spark Movement Collective, StylePointe, and Ballet Austin II have commissioned her for choreography. She was chosen as the Women’s Choreography Project winner by Avant Chamber Ballet and was featured in Pointe Magazine in 2018. Michelle’s Illusory Impressions collaboration and co-directorship with composer Catherine Davis was given an award by the Austin Critics’Table for excellence in a Site-Specific work as well as Robert Faires’ Top 10 Classical Music/Dance Treasures of 2016. Since moving to New York in 2015, she has shown works at Dixon Place, Actors Fund, Hudson Guild, Arts On Site, ShapeShifter Lab with The Dance Collective, and her own self produced evenings at Factory ArtSpace under her company name DISTRIBUTED MOVEMENT. Recently she had the opportunity to create a solo for Baily Jones (New York City Ballet), that premiered in Greece with The Festival Ballet Ensemble. Most recently, she was chosen as the 2019 winner of the J Chen Project CORE Choreography Competition, and she will create a new work on the company that will premiere at the Ailey Citigroup Theater on November 2nd. She teaches at Purchase College, performs with Spark Movement Collective and XAOC Contemporary Ballet, and lives in New York with her husband and 2 children.
